Thomas Farrugia

CEO, Beta Bugs

Beta Bugs Limited, headquartered in Edinburgh, UK, is an insect genetics company that develops and distributes Black Soldier Fly breeds to the insect farming sector.

The company’s mission is to increase the output of insect farmers through the use of its improved Black Soldier Fly genetics, HiPer-Fly®, which it supplies from its dedicated egg production facility, The Multiplier®. This enables the insect farming industry to up-scale production outputs and become competitive on price point against existing feed ingredients.

Thomas founded Beta Bugs after spotting the opportunity for improved genetics in the rapidly developing insect farming industry. This led to securing £3.2M in funding to establish an industry-first nucleus population and selective breeding programme for Black Soldier Fly adjacent to The Roslin Institute, world leader in animal genetics. Thomas believes that for the insect industry to reach its full potential, it will need to specialize and horizontally segment. Beta Bugs and genetics form part of this supply chain, supplying quality, genetically improved livestock that are used by insect farmers.
