Dr Carol-Anne Duthie is a Reader at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) and currently leads SRUC’s Beef and Sheep Research Centre near Edinburgh. After completing her BSc(hons) in Animal Science at the University of Aberdeen and her PhD in Animal Breeding at SRUC (in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh) she has spent more than 15 years in research.
Her research interests focus predominantly on understanding and optimising the efficiency of ruminant production systems. Alongside optimising feed efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions (including measurement and mitigation strategies), she has significant interest in the development and application of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) solutions for continuous, automated and real-time monitoring of individual animal productivity, health, welfare and their environment. She has interest in combining data and digital innovations to optimise supply chain efficiency from farm to fork.
A large proportion of her work involves collaborating with industry to deliver innovative solutions. She has extensive experience of collaborating and leading multidisciplinary programmes of work engaging across both industry and academia. She has responsibility for delivery of undergraduate teaching and is a supervisor/co-supervisor of PhD students. She has a publication history of >40 peer-reviewed publications. She is a former chair of the British Society of Animal Science (BSAS) Strategy and Innovation Committee, member of BSAS Awards committee, member of Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Networks Animal Sector Advisory Board, director of the Scottish Accreditation Board and review editor for Frontiers in Animal Science (Precision Livestock Farming).
